The current consumer-oriented CPU’s made by Intel are the “Intel® Core®” series, which consists of generally 3 variants, the “i3″, “i5″ and “i7″ processors.

These CPU’s are all based on the same microarchitecture, where “ï3″ processors are the low-performance variant, “i5″ medium and “i7″ the high-end version, with mostly matching prices. The numbers themselves (3, 5 and 7) are merely as brand names, and have no other significance.

For an overview of variants, see here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processor-comparison/compare-intel-processors.html

This common architecture has seen three revisions so far, referred to as “generations”.

These generations also shrunk the transistor sizes, allowing for more performance.

1st generation: “Nehalem” (45nm) & “Westmere” (32nm) using a LGA1156 socket.

2nd generation: “Sandy Bridge” (32nm) using a LGA1155 socket.

3rd generation: “Ivy Bridge” (22nm) using a LGA1155 socket.

Intel has a great page explaining the exact intricacies of their version-numbering here:

3rd Gen Intel Core means 3rd generation Intel core i3/i5/i7.

It is related to the manufacturing process and circuit spacing inside these CPUs.

i3, i5, i7 is the levels where in general, they go up in processor performance. The graphics included moves up at each generation also.

A first generation core i3 for example:

is the i3-550 available Q2 2010. The code name at Intel was Clarkdale. It uses a socket 1156. It has Intel HD graphics.

An i3-2120 is in 2nd generation available starting Q1 2011 known as Sandy Bridge using socket 1155.

Some have HD 3000 and some have HD 2000 graphics.

An i3-3220 is in 3nd generation available starting Q3 2012 known as Ivy Bridge using socket 1155.

Some 3rd generation have HD 4000 graphics and others like this one is HD 2500

In general use performance, i3-550 desktop processor scores average 3041 in passmark tests

i3-2120 scores 3973. i3-3220 scores 4315.

Wanted to get i7-920 at first but their motherboards don’t have the SATA3 thing.
