What does “i7″ mean, what does “3970″ mean and what does “X” mean. I think it is probably similar to graphics cards where some numbers represent generation and some performance. And what makes some i5 processors better than some i7 processors? How to know which one is better?

Also for AMD, FX-8350 for example

What does FX mean, and what does 8350 mean. And I think that is the newest processor, so what about the older ones? For example Phenom II X6 1100T BE. what does “Phenom II” mean, X6 is probably the number of cores, what does “1100T” mean, and what does “BE” mean.

I would prefer the most detailed explanation possible. I am not looking for “This processor is the best” or “look at the number of cores and GHz”. I am looking for a naming scheme for both Intel and AMD, so that I can know as much as possible about a processor just by looking at its name.

Honestly, no-one knows, believe me, no-one knows why Intel name their CPUs as 3570, 3770 and so on and why name the first, second, third generation CPUs confusingly as i3, i5, i7. Your guess is good as mine.

Oh X means Extreme Edition and BE means Black Edition and it’s just a fancy meaning for unlocked multiplier, overclocking enthusiast.

For intel there is in order of features, celeron, pentium, and core (i3 i5 and i7)

celeron and pentium are budget lines and lack a lot of features.

for core processor the first digit is the processor generation (not present -first 2 – second, 3- third)

and from there the higher the second and third number the higher the clocks. if the last number is a zero you have a desktop processor, if the last is a 5 a notebook processor, and 7a ultabook/ l processor.

As for AMD

Phenom II refers to the achecture/ die set, and has more features than the athalon.

The number is just that, the higher the better.

FX refers to the bulldozer archetecture,and the first number of the model number refers to cores, as for the rest, the higher the better.

the A-series are all in one ranging from 4-10 with higher numbers haveine cores and better video chips integrated.

Really the best bang for the bunch going to be an i5-3770 (in K or non-K version) as far as cpu power goes.
