Basically, Sandy Bridge is the 2011 Version of Processors by Intel based on the same architecture as its predecessor, the Westmere and Clarkdale processor which were the “i3 i5 i7″ series.


Ivy Bridge is the same architecture as Sandy Bridge but they’ve used native USB 3.0, PCI-E 3 (Graphics Cards perform faster with less power) and they’ve used a new method of powering the processor which takes away alot of heat from it. The main difference however is that Sandy Bridge is a 32nm architecture while Ivy bridge is a 22nm die shrink of it.


Edit: So Basically it’s more up to date and Is quite a bit faster, Is it worth paying an extra $ 50 for the new processors? Yes. Is it worth paying 250$ to upgrade from sandy? No.


Other Processors on the Market:

AMD Bulldozer a 32nm architecture competing to sandy bridge. The FX8100 is probably the best processor you can get and can beat the i5-3570k if you overclock it loads over 4.0GHZ

Wait for 2013 when Intel is introducing Haswell, a brand new architecture.

Those are names given by Intel to different types of CPU architecture. They are 2 types of CPU design which have been developed over the years, if you want to know more about it then I suggest you read this:

It is a very tech-heavy thing, so if you can’t understand it then it means you really shouldn’t have to worry about it. What matters to most people is which processors have been developed using those architectures.
