Answer by Σ∀⊥⊥

Should be able to run it just fine. Even if your game is lagging just download a program called gamefire. It will shut down unnecessary processes and make your game run smoother.

Answer by Michael

On those specs yes It would be Great on gaming it has a GREAT prossesor 17 which works like an 8 core cause of turbo boost when needed. and that it is NVIDIA it could play all if not most of the games out these days on moderate-high graphics.

and It is an ALIENWARE! They are the best gaming computers/Laptops in the world right now but IF you had the money I think the m17x is a bit better but might not be worth it for the price I could be wrong on this last statement though not sure.

Answer by Matt

@Michael – He could easily build a desktop for half the price of an Alienware and get double the performance. Alienwares really aren’t all that great. They’re basically the Macs of PC’s. They look nice, but most of the price goes toward the logo, and you could easily find better for less.

Also, I found it kind of funny how you confused “i7″ with “17″.

i5s can be either dual or quad core. i7s are usually quad or 6 core processors, so they are usually better. They also tend to have higher clock speeds than i5s and overclock better.

Answer by Ryun V

It depends what you’re going use it for. It’s going to be slow for editing and rendering, but it’s good enough for mid-high end gaming and very good for simple home tasks.

Answer by Chilaxin’

i3s are great if you are on a budget

They typically run at 3.0-3.4 Ghz and have 2 cores

i5 and i7 on the other hand have at least 4 cores

The i5 runs at about 3.2ghz- 3.7ghz overclocked

The i7 runs anywhere from 3.2ghz-4.5ghz overclocked

So in conclusion, yes it is worth the money to get an i5 over and i3

because it provides at least 3 times the speed (with cores and Ghz). So

definitaly consider and i5 at least.

Answer by Josh

Well i3 2120 is $ 120

I5 2500k is $ 220

And i7 is & 330

I would get i5, it’s almost the same speed as i7.

If money is an issue get i3 now and upgrade later down the road.

I3 is not slow by any means.

Yes

Answer by LookatMe

Gaming performance is mainly influenced by your GPU as long as your CPU is passable. (ie. modern)

But heres the vague idea with the Sandies:

i3s are pretty much for general gaming (ie, RPGs, simulations), web surfing, and amature home video encoding/photo editing (ie. family videos).

i5s are for “enthusiast” gaming (ie. FPS, RTS, the “big titles” ), and semi-professional video encoding/editing.

i7s are for “professionals” or high end gaming can say that run VMs, do serious video/photo editing and/or run professional applications like AutoCAD/Solidworks, etc.

Longetivity-wise, expect things to drop a rank every ~1.5-2 years. (i7 “becomes” i5, i5 “becomes” i3, etc.)

Power/heat wise, with the exception of the i3, which would use a fair bit (~30W) less power as it is a dual core, the i5/i7s are fairly identical. However, being in the same family, I doubt you will notice much of a difference between an i7 and an i3 in terms of noise and power bills.

The i5 is generally better than the i7 for games because it is cheaper; both are quad core CPUs. Additionally, the i7 has Hyper Threading (HT) which isn’t used in games. Lots of 3D rendering programs and video editing and encoding programs can have HT capabilities, but you must check if the software you are gonna use will make use of HT.

The i3 is a good CPU for gaming on a budget; it can beat a quad Phenom II 955 BE. Many games are capable of using two cores. Actually, a good amount of games can make use of 3 cores. Games capable of using 4 cores have started to arrive.

But my vote goes to the i5 as it represents the best balance of performance and price. Being a quad core CPU, it is more capable than the i3 with heavily multi-threaded programs. It is less expensive than the i7 because of the lack of HT which may or may not be useful depending on the programs being or will be used.

Its all very vague though, and will vary greatly depending on your specific situation.

You give us 2 components and I think you expect an answer. Not sure about that. The GFX card or integrated graphics processing unit is needed to provide an informed answer. There are dozens of “i7″ processors and multiple generations of i7 processors. There is a 0% chance that any answer you receive would be informed or correct. I could assume you have a i7 3770 but then again you could have a i7 960. We also don’t know the HDD in use or ANYTHING other than 8GB of RAM and a nameless i7. You are welcome to download, install and run http://www.piriform.com/speccy . You could then copy and paste into your add details section below your question and above out answer(s).

It appears you do not feel you can benefit from this site or you have gotten what you needed from another such as Tom’s. Either way it goes it’s in your best interest to take care of what you purchase with fans, canned air, thermal compound, temp. monitors and regular preventative maintenance. From what I see here I doubt the computer purchased will get the care and attention needed with such a laxidasical approach to the hardware selection process. That will shorten the life of the computer as a whole. It may be an inanimate object but it still needs to be cared for. When people go down this road they are literally asking for issues.

Answer by Austin Dauer

Well, it depends on what you are using to record, and how good your graphics card is.

Why don’t you try it? Open Minecraft, start recording, and, some recorders show the framerate in one of the corners, like FRAPS does for me. If not, go into the game, start recording, then do SHIFT + F3 and look in the top left for your framerate.

It also depends on what you have your recording settings at. You may get higher frames if you record in lower quality, or lower frames to record in higher quality.

I am running 5GB RAM on a standard 2.6GHz processor, and I usually get 30FPS (unless there are an extreme ammount of entities) when recording videos with FRAPS, and it is pretty smooth, and because of the fact the computer you are talking about has 8GB RAM as opposed to 5GB, and an i7 processor as opposed to a standard 2.6GHz processor, Minecraft should run pretty smoothly for you when recording with most software.

Answer by edit1754

The configuration you are looking at is not a good choice.

First, the biggest problem with your configuration is that you left in the default “15.6-inch diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1366×768)” option for the display. Generally, you should not buy the HP DV6 in any configuration that includes the stock 1366×768 display and not the upgraded 1920×1080 display. This is a double-sided issue, as it’s not only about how good the 1920×1080 display is, it’s also about how bad the 1366×768 display is. The DV6′s 1920×1080 display is great in that it has great image quality (due to good contrast), wide viewing angles, and lets you fit a lot onscreen due to the resolution itself. But on the other hand, 1366×768 resolution in a 15.6″ display makes things onscreen large, and 15.6″ displays that have 1366×768 resolution tend to be low-grade LCD panels with very poor image quality due to low contrast. You should make a point to avoid ‘junk’ displays like these when it is reasonable to do so, unless you require the larger text for eyesight-related reasons.

Second, the other main worthy selling point of the DV6(t) series is the availability of the GT 650M GPU. The GT 650M is notably faster than the GT 630M and Intel HD 4000. Generally, if you aren’t going to get the GT 650M, I would suggest an entirely different laptop in the first place.

Also, keep in mind that it probably shouldn’t be a priority for you to get a “Core i7″ processor. The processor is one of the most over-marketed components, but in reality most processors are already plenty fast enough for the majority of users. Game performance, for one thing, tends to be bottlenecked by the GPU before anything else, so if you’re interested in gaming then the GPU should be your primary focus as far as performance components go. Think about it this way: An i5-3210M is not a terrible processor, but a 15.6″ 1366×768 display is a terrible display. You need to be concerned with improving upon a display that’s pretty bad before you start trying to improve upon a processor that’s already pretty good.

Now it’s worth noting that the prices on the HP DV6 series aren’t the greatest right now. Generally, available discounts allow you to get an i5-3210M+1920×1080+GT 650M configuration for $ 850 or under.

If you’re stuck on the DV6, here are some configurations that are actually worth considering:

Well in short…

first came the pentium I, followed by pentium II, III, and IV. Then intel came out with the intel core 2 duo, the core 2 quad, and the core 2 extreme. They also came out with a few lesser known ones in this time. Shortly after they came out with the i3, i5, and i7.

The intel exeon is for a server.

Answer by t12_incomplete

i7 is latest technology for intel CPU’s, ATOM is low power low cost, for netpads etc

Answer by Mark B

First and foremost, processors are often broken down into two categories: desktop and mobile. Desktop processors are more powerful and power-hungry, whereas mobile processors are much smaller (of course), quieter, require less energy, and produce less heat. The Intel Atom processors is one such example of a mobile processor.

There are two major companies which produce desktop central processors: AMD and Intel. There is no consensus as to which one is better, but you might often hear that AMD is better value but Intel has greater reliability.

The modern Intel chipsets can be generally broken down into the following series, with the best first (roughly): core i7, core i5, core i3, core 2 duo, celeron, pentium

Modern AMD chipsets can be generally broken down into the following series, with the best first (roughly): Phenom II, Athlon II, Sempron

As for RAM, the idea is that the more RAM the better, but despite what people might tell you, for the forseeable future you will not need more than 4 GB of ram (I believe Windows 7 does not even recognize more than 3 GB of ram actually.) There exist different types of ram, including SDRAM and DDR SDRAM (there is also DDR2, DD3, each better than the last).

Answer by Buford T. Justice

Atom is a low-power CPU designed primarily for netbooks, and its performance is paltry compared to full-power chips. Intel’s Core series are the fastest consumer processors available, the i7 series being their flagship quad-core models. Core i5 chips are nearly as powerful, also quad-core for desktops though dual-core for notebooks. Core i3 is Intel’s entry-level CPU line and also dual-core, lacking the Turbo Boost feature of the i5 and i7. All the Core chips have a feature called HyperThreading, making them faster at the same clock speeds than the older Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors, as the CPUs appear to operating systems to have twice as many cores as are physically present in the chips themselves.

Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad were the last generation of 2- and 4-core Intel CPUs. Celeron was Intel’s offering for cheap laptops and desktops, single-core chips more powerful than Atom but slower than the 2- and 4-core chips.

AMD is the only other company making CPUs for laptops and desktops, and they are offering Athlon II X4, X3 and X2 processors, which have those numbers of cores. They make Turion chips for laptops as well.

You can check out benchmark performance for all these CPU lines here:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/2

You can even directly compare any two and see visually with bar graphs which performs better. That should put to rest any arguments amongst friends.

Answer by DEVAN Steyn

The best core is the Amd Phenom ii 3.2ghz x6. I mean 6 cores that’s crazy!!! I mean you get a total of 19.2 ghz. This truly is a must buy. (Hehe by the way this is Amd not intel sorry)

Answer by SlapStickBilly

What the hell? nobody remembers the Pentium D? Intel’s first consumer grade true dual core that came out after the Pentium 4 and before the Core 2 Duo.

Comparing a Core i7 800 series to an Atom is like comparing a Camaro SS to a Carolla. One is meant for performance, the other for economy. And if you are comparing the Core i7 900 series, well that is like a Corvette.

The Core i7 is a very advanced quad core, generally running around 120-135watts. The Atom is a low powered, low clocked single-core processors used in notebooks and other ITX-boards for really small form factor Desktops.

A few answers here have bugged me though.

-Mark B, Windows 7 32-bit can’t access more than 3GB of RAM, How ever, Windows 7 64-bit can access more than 4GB of RAM.

-DEVAN, increasing the number of Processing cores does NOT multiply the processor speed by the number of cores. that 6 core AMD processor only runs at 3.2GHz. Each core runs at 3.2GHz. Multiple cores break down the workload to be processed, thus processing multiple task is done faster. It is the equivalent of say having 6 secretaries typing at a desk v.s. 4. The 6 secretaries can get more work done, (provided there is enough work for 6 secretaries to do), than the 4 secretaries. The addition of 2 secretaries does not increase the speed at which the secretaries are typing.

Now for the RAM- Random Access Memory

First there was DDR, which stands for Dual Data Rate. What that means is that data is transferred on the upstroke of a clock cycle as well as the down stroke, which means it transfers twice the amount of data as regular SDRAM did.

DDR2 ups this by transferring twice as much data per clock cycle than DDR did. And DDR3 is an improvement from that, more data transfers per clock cycle.

It is not just the amount of RAM you have, but the type; DDR2 v.s. DDR3 and speed at which the RAM is clocked at, for example 1333MHz v.s. 1600MHz DDR3. The 1600MHz has a higher memory bandwidth due to its higher clock speed.

The other thing to consider in RAM is the CAS latency. a lower number has a lower latency, which will be faster that a highr latency. Generally, DDR3 has a higher latency than DDR2, but increasing technology is closing that gap. Even with it’s higher latency, DDR3 still is a lot faster than DDR2 due to its data transfers per clock.

RAM is also configured in channels.

Most computers today use dual channel RAM, but the Core i7 900 series on LGA1366 socket uses triple channel memory, (the Core i7 800 series LGA1156 socket uses dual channel) what that means that instead of using 2 sticks of RAM, you will be using at least 3 to take advantage of triple channel RAM. The end result is a higher overall memory bandwidth.

Different types of Intel processors?

For Core i7 I’m confused …?

Question created by SandwHich Baloney: I’m confused about the Core i7…?

I always thought that the Core i7 was a quad-core processor but each core could process two threads simultaneously so basically it has four physical cores but each of those cores is like a 2-in-1 package, so basically it delivers the performance as if it had 8 cores. I was thinking about buying a MacBook Air so I went to the Apple store section and started configuring it. Then I noticed one of the processor options was “1.8 Ghz dual-core Intel Core i7.” This made me so confused!!!!!! I thought all Core i7s were quad-core!! Either Apple made a mistake on their website or there’s a lot more to the i7 than I knew about! Could someone please clarify? Thanks.

Actually facts about I’m confused about the Core i7…? which you may really have to solve situations without any help. Thought to be able you will find in several ways: creating your life better. Who want facts about I’m confused about the Core i7…? is likely to be the most effective results sooner or later.

Answer by Allan

It should be noted that the ability of a particular CPU to “hyperthread” is NOT like

having two cores, but more akin to “multitasking” like a human checking their e-mail

while on hold on the phone.

Essentially it allows the core to do something else while it’s waiting for say… a hard drive write to finish for the drive to read the next batch of data.

So it isn’t even true “mult-itasking”, but more a “time sharing” setup to reduce the idle time

of the CPU core.

And since very few applications that people run really take complete advantage of

multiple cores…. let alone need to multi-task those cores as well.

It seems like a good idea, but practical applications for most users will be elusive.

Like giving your grandmother a car capable of doing 200miles an hour.

you wanna have it yourself, but likely you’ll be like the orthodontist who can

finally own a new Corvette then he drives it at the speed limit…. kinda pointless.

I do video file conversion and my software uses all four cores of my Q9450

(which does not Hyperthread) but I have other computers if I want to check

my e-mail (or ebay auctions) while a conversion is running.

Ticks and ttokttakneun What is it?

Topic written by bad guy wanna get good: What is the tick and tock?

what is the tick and tock in intel’s technological advancement? thats a bit confusing. please explain in bit detail. if you know about 22nm technology then please also tell about it and does core i7 use 22nm tech.??

would they be using the name ‘atom’ instead of core now?

This is exactly a look into What is the tick and tock? which you can would be smart to resolve concerns without some help. I hope this’ll help in many ways: and then make your life significantly better. Who wish a look into What is the tick and tock? may very well be an option at some point.

Most practical answer:

Answer by Sullivan

From Wikipedia:

“Tick-Tock” is a model adopted by chip manufacturer Intel Corporation since 2007 to follow every microarchitectural change with shrinking of the process technology. Every “tick” is a shrinking of process technology of the previous microarchitecture and every “tock” is a new microarchitecture.[1] Every year, there is expected to be one tick or tock.”

To clarify, I would add that the new microarchitecture of each “tock” uses the same process technology as the previous “tick”. And each shrinking that’s done for a “tick” uses the same microarch as the previous “tock”.

No, 22 nm process won’t appear in product until next year. When it does it will use the same microarchitecture as Sandy Bridge. It’s unclear whether they’ll use a new marketing name (replacing “core i7″) or change it.. .but they’ll probably change it. The marketing names don’t necessarily get changed with every tick/tock pair; the “core i3/i5/i7″ names have lasted now through two tocks and a tick.

edit – added: Anything is possible but it’s most unlikely that they’d re-use the Atom name for the followon to core i3/i5/i7. Atom refers to a series of low-power and low-performance CPUs intended for devices like netbooks.

Intel i5@2.4GHz or i7@1.73GHz?

Consult merely by Jack: Intel i5 @ 2.4GHz or i7 @ 1.73GHz?

I’m looking to buy a new laptop to replace my dying dell. I’ll be going to college next year, so it will be mainly for word processing and web browsing, but I also need it to be powerful enough for 3D modeling and drafting, possibly also a few games? Answer by flight boy15

The i5 sounds good cause i dont see alot difference between and i5 and i7 anyways. But yeah i will go for the i5

Answer by MethosTR

Yes, both are quad core, but the i7 features hyperthreading, which gives it 4 more virtual “cores”. Granted the virtual threads aren’t physical cores, but will still give a boost to applications that require CPU power. However the speed of the i7 processor is substantially slower than the i5.

Basically the tradeoff is more speed vs more threads.

Answer by Jordan Poynter

If you want to know if they are quad-core, you need to get the processor number (ex. core i7 “2760QM”) and you can go to Intel.com and type it in the search box to find out. You should also look at the graphics card if the laptop has it or integrated graphics on the processor. Check out how much RAM it has too. The difference is that the i7 (with as much info as you have told me) is slower than the i5. I have a core i3 @ 2.4 GHz and it works wonderfully. I also have 4 GB of RAM and integrated graphics on the CPU. I do web-browsing and light internet games. I would go with the core i5 from what i know. I hope this helps…..To wrap it up, I highly recommend you get the processor numbers and go to Intel.com and compare the two CPU’s, see how much RAM (memory) they have, and see if they have integrated graphics or a separate graphics card. (The integrated graphics should work fine and I recommend about 2-4 GB of RAM.) In response to someone else- both CPU’s have hyper-threading and turbo boost technology.

You will NEED to go with the P45. The X58 has an LGA1366 socket. The E8500 needs an LGA775 socket. The LGA1366 socket is only used on Core i7 processors.

The X58 is built for the newer Core i7 “CPUs”

Answer by james w

Unless you’re going to use Core i7 you have to use P45. X58 is for Core i7(socket 1366) and is incompatible with a Core 2 Duo. You can’t use an X58 board with your current processor.

Between X48 and P45, go for the P45. It overclocks just as well, if not better than an X48, is just as stable, and costs much less.

Answer by Eduard Khil

The 3570k is amazing price/performance. the 3770k is $ 100 more and is only better for many apps, “i5″ and “i7″ don’t mean anything.

Answer by C-Man

For gaming, the Core i5 3570K is ideal.

Core i7 processors have the EXACT SAME gaming performance as Core i5 processors. They are more expensive because they support hyperthreading, which improves performance in specialized applications like video editing software and 3D design programs (AutoCad, Maya, Blender etc) But hyperthreading does NOT provide any performance benefit in games!

You’re much better off getting a Core i5 and putting $ 100 more into your graphics card instead- because 70% of your overall gaming performance is determined by your graphics card. The combination of a Core i5 3570K with a $ 230 graphics card (like a GeForce GTX 660) utterly smokes a Core i7 3770K with a $ 130 graphics card like a GeForce GTX 560 SE or Radeon HD 7770.

Ok so 4GB mean 4 Gigabytes and that is most likely referring to the amount of RAM that the computer has on it(which just means how fast the computer can think and 4GB is pretty good), 500GBHD,500 Gigabyte Hard Drive, means that the computer has 500 Gigabytes of memory, so if the number is higher the more music, pictures, programs, games, and junk like that can be stored on your computer(Gigabyte is just a measurement name for data) Core i5 is the name of a the processor that the computer runs off of. It is sorta like the brain of the computer. Intel is the brand that makes Core i5 and it is a very good processor. If you are wanting to get a new laptop I would recommend either a HP or Asus. Answer by Reece

4 GB means the amount of RAM that your computer has.

RAM is used for running applications and programs.

500 GB HDD is the hard drive disk. This is the capacity of your hard drive and you use it to run your operating system on and store files, photos, music, and other stuff you want.

Core i5, is your computers processor. The processor is like the brain of your computer.

The intel core i5 is a good processor and one of the newer ones.

Answer by John R

The 4 GB represents the amount of RAM (Random Access Memory) in the computer. These are the memory chips used by the computer to hold programs and data while running. 4 GB is reasonable, and most systems allow you to add memory later.

The data in memory is lost when the computer is turned off – unless you write it to the Hard Drive. That’s what the 500GB represents. It’s a magnetic disk in the computer that you can record data to. 500 GB is equivalent to roughly 100 DVDs. All of your programs and files are stored on that disk. If you are clueless about computers, you may not ever come close to filling 500 GB.

“Core i5″ is the model name of the processor, or brain, of the computer. It has no specific meaning for you, other than a “Core i3″ is the lower end model, the “i5″ the mid range, and “Core i7″ is the high end. These are part of Intel’s line of processors . Any of these will be adequate unless you know you have a higher requirement – even an i3 will easily handle the uses most people have for their computers.

We really need more information on what you mean by “new chip”. The most likely answer, actually, is that you are referring to “Nehalem”, which is already out, it came out in November as “Core i7″.

Answer by PhucDang

Intel Core i7 is an Intel brand name for several families of desktop and laptop 64-bit x86-64 processors using the Nehalem, Westmere, and upcoming Sandy Bridge microarchitectures. The “Core i7″ brand is marketed for the business and high-end consumer markets and is intended to differentiate these processors from Core i5 processors intended for the main-stream consumer market and Core i3 processors intended for the entry-level consumer market.

“Core i7″ is a successor to the Intel Core 2 brand.[1][2][3][4] The Core i7 identifier was first applied to the initial family of processors[5][6] codenamed Bloomfield introduced in 2008. In 2009 the name was applied to Lynnfield and Clarksfield models.[7] Prior to 2010, all models were quad-core processors. In 2010, the name was applied to dual-core Arrandale models, and the Gulftown Core i7-980X Extreme processor which has six hyperthreaded cores.

Intel representatives state that the moniker Core i7 is meant to help consumers decide which processor to purchase as the newer Nehalem-based products are released in the future.[8] The name continues the use of the Intel Core brand.[9] Core i7, first assembled in Costa Rica,[10] was officially launched on November 17, 2008[11] and is manufactured in Arizona, New Mexico and Oregon, though the Oregon (PTD, Fab D1D) plant has moved to the next generation 32 nm process.

Quad cores, Intel Core i7 or previous Yorkfields are the way to go. At least 2GB of RAM recommended.

Answer by SterPre

OK, firstly, forget what the guy above mentioned, I mean an “i7″ processor? Blah! Lets get down to the “broke-uni-student” level Upgrade Transcend Ram REALLY RAM Quad Cores processor problem PCI order need motherboard Intel Core High Definition help good gaming editing Edit desktop DDR CPU Computer Blah Lets better best answer Edit! To help you upgrade your computer! httpdesktopi7 blogspot com

OK, the best “CPU” that’s a bang for your buck is the “Q6600″ it’s Quad Core and runs at 2.4ghz (overclockable, get a friend that knows to do so.)

For ram, you will need around 2GB minimum, if you look around on eBay, you will find VERY cheap ram these days (stay away from the non-branded ones.)

The best cheap ram’s out there today are the “Kingston ValueRAM” and the “Transcend Ram.” You can go onto eBay and search it, they cost around $ 20 for a 2GB?

And for a graphics card, I would say you will need a very cheap but good card, I would recommend the “8600GT DDR3 PCI-e” its VERY cheap, and plays any game up until the end of 2008 on low settings, so its still a very good card (for gaming, for editing its an excellent card.)

But the main problem here is finding out if your Motherboard can support these upgrades. If you computer is below the year 2005, then you may still be using “DDR” ram not “DDR2″ and your Motherboard also may not support DuoCore’s. (you need a 1066FSB support motherboard. Yours may be 800FSB.)

Please look into that, if it doesn’t you can pick up motherboards that support Quad Cores, PCI-e and DDR2 for around $ 25 of eBay or newegg.com

So you will need:

- Q6600 CPU (around $ 100)

- 2GB-4GB DDR2 800Mhz Ram (around $ 20-$ 35)

- 8600GT DDR3 PCI-e Graphics card (around $ 40)

- $ 25-$ 35 Motherboard that supports the above (if your current one doesn’t.)

Hope this helps.

Edit: If your REALLY broke, and only have $ 100, then I suggest you upgrade the current ram you have now to at least 2GB and get a friend to overclock your processor a few mhz, and that will REALLY cut down the editing/loading time by so much. I mean, if your running a Pentium 4, and upgrade of ram from 512mb to a 2-4GB will boost your editing time from a few hours to around 2-3 minutes.

Best computer for home use?

Query basically by joliesoleil: Best computer for home use?

My husband and I are planing on buying a computer. I’m sure we’re probably one of the only people on the planet that still do not own one! He doesn’t know very much about computers and when it comes to technical stuff – I’m at a loss. We would basically use it to store photos/videos, make spreadsheets and word documents and of course surf the net. Any suggestions so we don’t end up making a bad choice?

I can recommend DELL (www.dell.com). They sell really solid computers.

Answer by Frank

My first suggestion is never to buy at a retail store. The computers there are usually old and out of date the second you plug them in. Best idea is to browse a website such as Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=10&name=Desktop-PCs there is a link to Desktop PC’s from them. Look for ones in your price range. What you should look for is a system with at least 3+ gigs of RAM, a 500+ gigabyte 7200 RPM Hard drive, and a dedicated graphics card (do not buy something that says Intel GMA). A good computer should run you about $ 2000. Remember the more you spend the longer the computer will run things acceptably. If all you are looking to do is Web browsing/basic Office stuff you can get a cheaper computer of course. Oh and DO NOT buy a Dell they are awful they used to be superb but their build quality is super cheap now.

When you get it the first thing you should do is install a antivirus on it such as Avira http://www.free-av.com and Firefox http://www.getfirefox.com . Other then that ask more questions as they arise.

Answer by Gant

All of what you want depends on your preferences.

You can get a decent comp for around 500-600.

I would suggest you buy a nice computer. Buying a top of the line comp usually maximizes your experience, increases longevity of the comp’s lifetime, but overall allows for a longer time of the computer being “top of the line”

If you want the best that is out there now. I would go for a computer that was built for Intel’s ” i7 ” series. It will cost you but it is the best that is out there.

If you want decent go for a computer that is built with an Intel core 2 duo with at least 4 gb of ram and a nice graphics card.

If you want in between get an Intel quad core processor and at least 4 gb of ram.

If you don’t really know much about computers, I can’t really throw out all the technical terms and stuff you should be getting on your computer.

I don’t really like store bought computers because they come with a lot of junk already on them, though they do allow you to not have to go through the process of putting all the programs on them.

Good luck.

If you need any more help I will gladly help you out with your buying process. My email is on my profile.

Answer by takataone

they are all much the same, just don’t buy a real cheap computer for there will be some things left off that you will find on a more expensive one.

go for a mid priced computer if this is your first computer and then once you have mastered the pc you could then think about buying a better one later on,

mistakes will be made on the computer so don’t be too surprised if things go wrong.

good luck

Unless you’re playing the latest games, just about anything will do. Photos, music, word processing and spreadsheats just don’t take that much horsepower.

Desktops typically give you more bang for the buck, are more reliable, and are more upgradeable if you discover something you need later but didn’t think of when you bought it. If I were buying one today, I’d get something like this:

http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0325414

Remember that you’ll also need a monitor.

Don’t get sucked into buying a lot of software. There’s plenty out there available for free online.

1. Anti virus. Visit your isp’s (internet service provider) website. Most have a decent package available at no extra charge. I get McAfee from AT&T

2. Productivity: go to OpenOffice.org. They offer a free package that equal to or better than Microsoft Office. It will read and write Microsoft file formats.

3. Graphics, photo editing: Gimp. http://www.gimp.org/, although you probably got a disc with your digital camera that has some basic editing software.

4. Sound editing, music: Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Rip all your cd’s to mp3, then connect the audio line out to an aux input on your stereo. You may never use your cd player again. Just set up playlists and party on. Using my old turntable and cassette deck, I’ve even converted my old favorites (Donovan, the Buckinghams, Jefferson Airplane….) to mp3.

Answer by George

Best depends on when. Even the top brands have made lemons. It is not only the computer, but service on it when there is a problem. HP made a series with defective hard drives, and I have heard several horror stories about the service for Dell computers. If you have a local computer store or a local computer repair shop, they can give you the information you need.

I have a relative that owns a computer store and they know what components are the best at the present time. The prices are a few percent about the chain stores, but his customers know they can get speedy service and even a loaner computer if repairs are going to take a while.

adobe software is running slow as hell. i took all the stuff off my desktop, cleaned everything up, switched it to intel core i7 did all that but it’s still as slow as a bitch. i think my head is about to explode. im a newbie designer i got 2 projects to finish real soon to add to my portfolio and it’s fucken up. i think indesign is going a bit faster than photoshop and illustrator, would that be because indesign is 5.5 and photoshop and illustrator are both 5.1? i also heard that adobe didn’t spend much time writing programs for mac book pro’s, so it’s a bit dodgy on these computers. that true?

hello, this is like my billion post on this kind of stuff, but i really need to make a choice by tomorrow. SO i here are my current specs..

pentium dual core e2220 2.4 GHz (oc to 2.8 stock voltage and stick cooling and stays cool no problem playing crysis gamer settings)

foxxcon napa motherboard (which dosent let me oc, or mess with settings to get higher overclocks)

9800 gt i gig edition sli ready

and i use a 19 inch monitor.

now am thinking instead buying all this

i fugure getting all that and comes out to a grand total of 324 dollars and 1 cent. instead if just trowing 220 dollars at a e8500.

if i buy that stuff, i will be using my current processor and oc the hell out of it, maybe it can reach 3.4 GHz or so. I think it will since am currently running on stock cooling and stock volts and it dosent go above 50c.

and i will be using my current hard drive, which is pretty fast. basicly anything that is missing on the new build” will be taken from my current pc.

Now before you go off saying ” save money for i5 or i7″, no, i will not waste 700+ dollars on a an i5 . I plan to do that in about a year or so. maybe 1 1/2 years from now. But for now, just upgrade.

keep in mind that everything am buying now, basicly will be reusable in new build, specially windows 7. since i dont have one right now, thats y am buying it, my current pc was prebuilt so am limited.exep the motherboard, which i dont mind selling for 5 dollars in one year.

With my current pc, am limited to what i can do, since my motherboard bios is locked, my power supply dosent provide enough power to my cpu to overclock.( i use riva tuner to overclock) If my psu was more powerfull, i cant hit 3.0 clocks stock volts, and my motherboard dosent dupport sli.

With the new motherboard, i will be able to do eighter sli, or just trow in my old 9600 gt as a dedicated phisics card. As far as dx 11 goes, i dont see any diference, besides the fact that games run better in dx 11, so a couple of frame loss wont bother me.

As far as my processor bottlenecking, i can get a core 2 duo used at a local computer shop for around 50 bux, or a q9300 for 80 should i see the need for one in the future, i dont think i will if i can clock current at 3.4-3.7 GHz.

LAST QUESTION, WILL ALL THE PARTS LISTED BE COMPATIBLE WITH EACHOTHER??? AM PRETY SURE THEYA ARE, but if there not please let me know…

BTW to sli, does the card have to be exacly the same?? or can it be a 9800 gt but different company, i have pny, can i add evga?? or it has to be same model, same card, same everything?

This is definitely regarding who can help me with gaming computer set up? which you can require to clear up problems independantly. I think ocing is your best option. With the cooling you are going to buy along with the better motherboard and power supply you will be able to take it even further. I don’t know why your afraid of pushing the volts either – Give that puppy some juice and let her go.

All the parts are compatible.

For sli the brand does not matter they just have to be the same card ie: 9800gt

80 dollar quad is a better deal then 50 core 2 duo.

Who can help you set up the game computer?

I need to purchase the Alienware?

Real question made by Simon Snipe: Should I buy an Alienware?

I need a new desktop computer, and I’m going to use it for gaming. Most of the games I want are coming out later this year or next year – so I want my computer to be able to run these new games really well. (There’s no way I can build my own) I saw the “Alienware Aurora” on the Dell site, and it’s reviews are amazing. I’m really horrible with computers, and I was hoping someone could tell me if it’s specs were “okay.”

Cost: 1,200 (tax included)

PROCESSOR — Intel® Core™ i3 530 Dual Core 2.93GHz (4MB Cache)

OPERATING SYSTEM — Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English

MEMORY — 3GB DDR3 at 1333MHz

HARD DRIVE — 500GB – SATA-II, 3Gb/s, 7,200RPM, 16MB Cache HDD

GRAPHICS CARD — ATI Radeon™ HD 5670, 1GB GDDR5

OPTICAL DRIVE — 24X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability

SOUND CARD — Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio

I noticed the processor was “i3″ where most other computers I’ve seen had “i5″ or higher, does this mean anything? I’m going to be using the computer for gaming and web surfing, and typing and stuff. Nothing really beyond that.

Also, I’ve heard people say that alienwares are ripoffs, but I love the reliability and if you think that, I’d appreciate if you could show me a computer that was better. I really want to be able to run brand new games really well.

EDIT: @ItachisXeyes: Lol, well I don’t really care at all if it’s ‘custom’ or not, and there’s NO WAY I’m building my own, I can’t. Thats out of the question.

EDIT: My main concern is if the i3 processor is good enough.

Undoubtedly all about Should I buy an Alienware? which you might must have to clear up concerns their selves. Answer by Lil’ Rascal

I’ve been saving money and planning on building a Home Theater PC (internet, typing, watching and “burning” DVDs, etc … NOT serious gaming) and I’ve found that, for the price, the i3-530 CPU is perfect for me … it will do what I want it to, and be the “newest of the new” while still consuming less power than the “quad-cores.” It’s only $ 120 by itself, and the reviews state that it is a really serious competitor (but ONLY when “over-clocked”) to the obvious “non-i7″ gaming choice … the i5-750 (the only true quad-core of the i5 series).

At $ 200, the i5-750 (as long as you have a decent graphics card) is a LOT cheaper than the i7 and is super-powerful.

Now, I know “jack-shyt” about the inside of a computer myself, but I have a buddy that read couple of books (that I am now reading) called “Build the Ultimate Custom PC” and “Building the Perfect PC.” I read how you feel, so I’m not advocating that you build your own (unless you have a smart friend that is willing to do it for you).

My point is, that if you want a gaming computer, the i3-530 is not the best choice. The Alienware site lists the two prices of the Aurora at $ 1,074 and $ 1,299. I assume you’re talking about buying the cheaper one.

Question 1. Will Dell allow you to upgrade to an i5-750 processor for a nominal fee? (be aware that in the “parts” world, the difference in price is $ 80).

Question 2. If you can afford the $ 1100 computer, can you save up another $ 200 and get the $ 1300 computer with the i7-920 quad-core instead? That’s the SERIOUS gaming computer, and I think you’d be MUCH happier with it, as opposed to the i3-530.

If your motherboard can support i7 too, then you can just buy an i7, and then just replace your i5.

Else you cant., but since, its i5, i guess your motherboard will also support i7

Its so simple to replace. but better dont play with it. let a good service guy or your friend who knows it, do for you

Answer by Leor Roynsky

Any model of the Sandy Bridge intel core i3, i5 and i7 processors all need a motherboard that has a 1155 socket. I am assuming that you are currently using a core i5 processor. If that is the case you should have no problem switching from i5 to i7 with your current motherboard.

If you don’t know what you’re doing take it to a professional. Don’t screw your CPU up because you didn’t know how to put it in properly, the pins on the CPU bend very easily and one pin broken is a dead CPU.

Answer by Who Am I

Yes, there is an option for that.

Download and use this program to identify your CPU socket

http://www.cpuid.com/

I presumed if your motherboard support Core i5, it will either have

LGA 1156 (1st generation) socket or LGA 1155 (2nd generation) socket.

STAY AWAY from Core i7 CPU that uses LGA 1366 and LGA 2011 socket.

These socket are high-end and are exclusive for the i7 series only.

LOOK FOR Core i7 CPU that use LGA 1156 socket (Example: i7-860 , i7-870 ) and LGA 1155 socket (Example: i7-2600K , i7-2600 )

BE AWARE! MAKE SURE THE CORE i7 CPU SOCKET IS THE IDENTICAL TO THE CPU SOCKET ON YOUR MOTHERBOARD OR IT WILL NOT WORK.

(Example: LGA 1155 socket is for Core i7 with LGA 1155 socket and vice versa)

Replacing a CPU is really easy but be cautious though. Checkout this video, its old but it cover all the basic that you need to do since CPU have only change a few :

Here’s a newer video with a LGA 1155 motherboard.
