Is an I5 processor such as the 2nd generation Intel Core i5-2450M Processor( 2.50GHz 1333MHz 3MB) more powerful? or the

3rd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3610QM Processor (2.3 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)?

I am talking interms of playing video games, and what is the difference between i5 and i7 processors? For example, would an i7 intel processor with 2.5ghz be worse than an i5 processor with 3.0 ghz?

A more broad question i am asking: IdeaPad Y570 Laptop or the HP Pavilion dv6t-7000 Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC, which one is better at gaming ? I know that i7 processors have more cores, but if it has a lower ghz than the i5 processors then is it worse than the i5 in terms of gaming ? Thanks in advanced.

As far as I know 7>5. That being said, an i5 would be best for your purpose

An i5 processors would be good enough for all games at the moment, given that you avoid multitasking while playing. Now what matters is the GPU you use.

The IdeaPad Y570 uses an nVidia GT555M while the HP uses either NVIDIA GT 630M or 650M. In my opinion 650 > 555 > 630 so it depends on which version of the HP you get.

get the i7 cause it has a larger cache but some advice your not going to be able to play a game with an integrated GPU you need to get a laptop with a dedicated GPU do some research before you ask these questions. Honestly i wouldnt even get a laptop if your going to game on it thats stupid because a desktop is cheaper and they have better GPU’s than laptops and its hard to find a manufacturer that sells laptops with decent GPU’s. Read the guys post above me dont know much about HP computers cause I build my own but go with the one with the Geforce 555m gt that gpu is a little better than the one in the xbox 360 for comparison.

Okay, so I’m going to divide this answer into two sections.

The first: i5 vs. i7

The second: HP Pavillion vs Lenovo Ideapad

Part 1:

For laptops, i5s will have two cores, while all i7s (excluding some low-power variants) will have 4 cores.

More cores = more multitasking, in general. However, some games cannot take advantage of all 4 cores, and then they are, in turn, wasted. That’s where the 3.0 Ghz vs 2.3 Ghz comes into play.

On a game/application that only uses 2 cores, the i5 @ 3 Ghz will perform better, if you don’t factor in Turbo Boost.

Turbo Boost allows the processor to clock itself higher if it notices that not all of the cores are being used, so that the performance will be roughly around the same anyways.

i7 processors will consume more power than i5s, so that should be kept in mind.

The i5 has 4MB of cache, with the i7 having 6MB, which will help as well.

Note that some of this information stated above only applies to LAPTOP computers.

I’m going to assume that you won’t be gaming on INTEGRATED graphics, as you have listed laptops that use dedicated cards.

Part 2:

Chances are, if you want to play games, the “bottleneck” will be the GPU.

If you want to get the HP Pavilion, make sure you get the one with GT550M graphics, you’ll want the performance and 1GB of GDDR5 memory. Also, it cancels out the CPU limitation, as it has a core i7. Now, HP is offering a free upgrade to 8GB of memory as well. The HP laptop also includes the newest CPUs and GPUs, which offer much needed battery life improvements.

The Lenovo uses previous generation processors, which also consume more power. It also has a smaller hard drive (500GB compared to 1TB).

The i5 will “Turbo” up to 3.1 GHz, with the i7 “Turboing” to 3.3 GHz!

So, to conclude:

Get the HP if possible, it costs $ 200 more though. The i7 should perform better than the i5, at the sacrifice of energy efficiency. However, the HP Pavillion uses brand-new processors, which have around 20% less power consumption for both the GPU and CPU.
