its the model number, it basically tells you which i7 it is.

the i7-2600 is a 3.4ghz core i7 with 4 cores, 8 threads. It is a 2nd generation based on the sandy bridge architecture. It has locked cpu multipliers.

the i7-3770k is a 3.5ghz core i7 with 4 cores, 8 threads. Its a 3rd generation based on the ivy bridge architecture. It has unlocked cpu multipliers.

8xx/9xx = 1st generation

2xxx = 2nd generation

3xxx = 3rd generation

a K after it, means it has unlocked multipliers for overclocking.
