What is a good computer set up in the video editing?

Challenge created by Andrew: What is a good computer set up for video editing?

I am looking into building (or possibly buying and modifying) a new computer, mainly for video and special effects editing in HD. I am using CS5 on my laptop and it has a heart attack every time I try to render. I might do some minor gaming as well, but not focused on that.

This is what I am thinking so far:

Intel Core i7 3.4 ghz

8+ Gigs DDR3 SDRAM

1.5 Terabyte HDD

Windows Home 64bit

Advice anyone?

Nobody say anything about Macs, I’m not interested.

I know your thinking of windows but my friend is the biggest video editor and when he went to Apple he said that it was so much better. However i believe that games and other stuff is better on windows.

You will need a GPU with that configuration. Use a gtx 580 or HD 6970 along with that configuration

Good configuration. i7′s hyper threading will definitely help with this. The ram is good enough for video rendering. Hard disks are so cheap that you may want to just switch to a 2TB hard disk because its nearly the same price as a 1.5TB drive.

I assume you’re getting the i7 2600(K) so everything I recommend is based off that. If its not the 2600(K) then ignore the motherboard / onboard graphics bit.

For the motherboard and graphics, I recommend you get a Intel Z68 chipset based motherboard. It allows use of the onboard graphics to help speed video rendering. Also, you may want to get a dedicated graphics card if you do some gaming. I recommend nVidia, since they have the best graphics cards out there. The nVidia cards also have CUDA technology, which helps speed up video rendering.

For some minor gaming, I recommend a GTX 550(Ti) or GTX 560 (Ti) – These are good for many games.

By the way, if you get a Z68 motherboard, you may want to also get a Core i7 “K” edition. It has better onboard graphics for improved video rendering and it is easy to overclock with the “K” edition. If you overclock, it will speed up the rendering of video but it depends on how much you overclock. You also need a good cooler.

Don’t get 32 bit Windows 7. It wont allow use of more than 3.5GB of RAM and video rendering requires alot of RAM.
