First, if you are going to buy the HP DV7t, you need to make sure that you are buying it in a configuration that includes the upgraded 1920×1080 display and not the stock 1600×900 display.

1600×900 resolution in a 17.3″ display makes things onscreen large, and 17.3″ displays that have 1600×900 resolution tend to be low-grade LCD panels with very poor image quality due to low contrast. You should make a point to avoid displays like this (15.6″ 1366×768, 17.3″ 1600×900, etc.) when it is reasonable to do so, unless you require the larger text for eyesight-related reasons.

This display, and the GPU (assuming you’re using it for gaming) need to be the first two upgrades you select, before considering any other upgrades. The base config plus these two upgrades, factoring in current coupons and discounts, is $ 1084. If this is outside your budget, the solution is not to downgrade the display nor the GPU. If this is outside your budget, start looking at entirely different laptops that get you a decent GPU and a decent display at the same time for cheaper.

Also it’s worth noting that game performance depends considerably more on the GPU than it depends on the CPU, and most currently-available computers come with CPUs that are far beyond powerful enough for the majority of users. It shouldn’t be a priority for you to get a “Core i7″ processor, or anything like that. Keep in mind that a Core i5-3210M isn’t a terrible processor, but a 17.3″ 1600×900 display is a terrible display. You need to be concerned with improving a display that’s pretty bad before you start trying to improve upon a CPU that’s already pretty good.

That said, follow this if you’re interested in the HP DV7t:

**HP DV7t Quad Edition (NVIDIA GT 650M, 17.3″ 1920×1080 matte display) – **$ 1084 + tax**

- Saved Configuration: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/load_configuration.do?destination=review&config_id=7683397

- Apply coupon code NB7845

- Don’t downgrade the GPU to the GT 630M or to Intel HD 4000 graphics. The GT 650M is considerably faster than either, and if one of the lower GPU options would work just as well for you then I would probably suggest getting an entirely different laptop.

Don’t downgrade the display to 1600×900.

Or, for the 15.6″ version: (note: no free Blu-ray player)

**HP DV6t Quad Edition (NVIDIA GT 650M, 15.6″ 1920×1080 matte display) – **$ 999 + tax**

- Saved Config: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/load_configuration.do?destination=review&config_id=7683403

- Coupon code NB8372

- Same things about not downgrading the display/GPU apply.

Much cheaper w/ i5 CPU:

**HP DV6t** (NVIDIA GT 650M, 15.6″ 1920×1080 display) – **$ 749 + tax**

- Saved Config: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/load_configuration.do?destination=review&config_id=7674563

- Apply coupon code NB7453

- Same things about not downgrading the display/GPU apply.

The DV7t i5 does not offer the 650M.
