Core i7 compatible power supply?

Subject caused by anne: core i7 compatible power supplies?

I am in the process of building a new PC with an Intel i7 quad core. I currently have a 500w power supply that is in my old dell XPS. My question is that I see all over the place these power supplies saying “compatible with i7″. Does this mean that it is necessary to purchase a new power supply for this chip? Or is the current power supply that I have okay for what I’m trying to do?

You should be ok. People like to slap meaningless jargon like that on their products to give the illusion of quality. It’s like when generic hardware, like, say, a hard drive would say “compatible with Windows 7″…. it’s a freaking hard drive… of COURSE it’s compatible.

The processor family is relatively irrelevent to your choice of PSU.

What does matter is that it

1: has the right connectors (though adaptors are generally available), in particular many current high end boards need an 8 pin “EPS” 12V connector (note: this is NOT the same as the 8-pin connector used on graphics cards)

2: can provide enough power on those connectors (most PSUs have multiple 12V rails these days, unfortunately PSU vendors often don’t bother to document which connectors are on which 12V rail these days)

Acknowledge much better?
